In a recent report NHS England have said that ‘autism and learning disability’ will be a clinical priority in their upcoming ten-year plan to improve health services in England.
This announcement is a potential game changer. It will mean that LD and autism are core parts of the NHS’ future strategy and that care can be shaped around autistic people’s and people with Learning Disabilities often hidden needs. Many people don’t get the care they need or are misunderstood.
The NHS is due to talk with organisations, professionals and individuals to identify key issues within each of the four priority areas of focus over the coming months.
This is positive news that could offer individuals and their families and organisations (such as the National Autistic Society) the opportunity to highlight the importance of a timely diagnosis, post-diagnostic support, and training to further awareness of autism, learning disabilities and behaviours that challenge and the ways in which healthcare professionals can support these patients.
